A1 Kasha Prototype Cedar top and Canadian Cypress back and sides

Description

Michael Kasha was a brilliant scientist who designed a most effective bracing system for guitars. He repaired a cheap guitar for his son and became obsessed with improving the design of acoustic guitars. Now, he is recognized by luthiers around the world as an icon of modern guitar improvements. Thus, I created this guitar to test the Kasha system for A. Davis Guitars in 2006. It was originally intended for production. Thankfully, I got it right on the first try. Unfortunately, this may be the only one ever made.

Most importantly, this guitar achieves all of the goals of the Kasha system with none of the drawbacks. It has remarkable volume and clarity with bright highs, crisp mids and bold lows. Notably, playability and stability are key features. Many Kasha type guitars are notorious for wildly warped tops and rough setups; a result of the extra light bracing. However, this prototype has remained stable for years. Fortunately, it has very low action yet stunning volume and sustain.

This guitar uses the A1 class molds. It has a 12th fret neck joint and 25.5″ scale with 1 7/8″ nut width. The Kasha design moves the sound-hole off-center to make the top a larger tone producing surface. Crucially, the bridge and bracing pattern are specially designed to compliment each string’s tension and tonal qualities. Also, the saddle and bridge are divided to further enhance the separation of bass and treble strings.

Most importantly, these key features drive sound forward to the audience. The effect is striking. Conversely, a side hole is often needed just so the player can hear. The side hole also helps break up the Helmholtz resonance that kills certain notes on most guitars. Altogether, this prototype has musicality and power that has to be heard to be believed.
